This didn't pan out, of course, and the game rightfully opts for a final boss with a connection to the main character, but Chernabog as a potential finale makes sense. It's entirely possible he still served as the main antagonist, but we know from past information that Chernabog from Fantasia was actually intended as the original final boss. Sora Donald And Goofy Versus Chernabog Early on during the game's conception/developmental phase, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness did not serve as the. Sora's identity is still very much present here. Regardless, Sora's Lion design is by no means bad. Lion Sora with a chainsaw likely would have resulted in a very different audience for Kingdom Hearts. It's interesting to wonder the series that could have resulted from this crossover. Not just that, he wasn't even human, with the intent being that he was half-Lion. He's the kind of character you can recognize even silhouetted, but he originally wasn't so simply designed. Sora s Original Design Despite how often Sora changes his clothes from adventure to adventure, his design is downright iconic. ![]() Not just that, it seems the development team were set on Sora taking Christopher Robin's place from the get-go. In regards to this specific piece of concept art, it's simply worth noting that 100 Acre Wood was an intended world seemingly early on. It's more meaningful to adapt Disney content in video game form than FF content that already exists as a video game. Keep in mind that Final Fantasy is already rooted in the medium, whereas Disney animation isn't. Sora Pooh Piglet And Tigger The crossover elements at the center of have skewed heavily (and almost exclusively) towards Disney in recent entries, but that was perhaps always the franchise's fate. Riku's more composed attitude within the sketch contrasts him directly with Sora (as does simply featuring him on a lesser scale,) while Kairi herself is clearly depicted as the caretaker and nurturer of the group, a role that makes sense for her albeit one the plot prevents her from playing. ![]() Sora is, of course, featured most prominently, showcasing his energetic, shonen, but Riku and Kairi come off well too. Just one glance at this frankly messy sketch is enough to understand where Kingdom Hearts wanted to go with Sora, Riku, and Kairi as characters. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY The Destiny Islands Trio One of the immediate values of early character art is the establishment of character traits. Perhaps that could explain part of Kingdom Hearts' erratic nature, but these pieces of concept art more shine a spotlight on what the franchise's intentions always were both tonally and thematically, showcasing characters and concepts in unique ways. That's the case for any franchise, but it's especially interesting with , where earlier entries in the series actually saw quite a bit of changing during the conception & developmental process. It's not unusual to stumble upon concept art that, at the end of the day, looks to promise a different game than what we ultimately got. It's easy to take for granted just how much work goes into not just developing a game, but conceiving it.
